“What will happen when we arrive back in your city?” I sit on a fallen log by the fire, my clothes dry and warm, my stomach filling, and my hands wet from the juices that drip from my dinner’s meat. “Now that I am no longer your captive but a…” I think on that for a moment and try to summon a word that won’t taste like acid on my tongue. “Friend.”

Malachai snorts, but hides it by taking another bite. He sits right beside me, his legs open wide so his thigh touches my knee, and his natural scent mixed with the worn leather of his armor overpowers even the smell of baking fish. He chews on his dinner and swipes a hand across a heavy bottom lip to reveal a grin. “You were to come home bound, starving, and hurt. This was not supposed to be a weekend spa trip for you.”

“And yet,” I look at my fish and then the rushing water Malachai restarted once we got out and dried off. “I’m fed, clean, smiling, and my fire and your water means we can create a spa whenever we want.”

He lifts a single brow and shakes his head at the fire. “I suggest you stop wanting, if you don’t want me to see you in your skin.”

“You didn’t answer my question.” I toss the last of my fish into the fire, then sit back and groan at my pleasantly satiated belly. “They’re gonna want my head at the gates, no?”

“Yep.” He continues to eat. Continues to fill his body that’s almost twice my size. “My mission was to capture the princess and bring her home to die. Ugh,” he grunts. “Means I’ll have to protect you when we arrive.”

“Nice turn of events,” I snicker. “Don’t sound so pleased.”

“I’ll ensure you have a moment to speak, Tallulah, but this war has been going for a long time. Who’s to say you didn’t bewitch and trick me in this forest?”

I consider that, only to smirk and lift one shoulder.

“You’ll have a minute to state your business,” he repeats, “then our guards will assume you’ve tricked me.”

“Which means they question your mental state and ability to rule,” I point out.

“And eventually leads to you becoming a prisoner once more, and me a ward of the hospital wing until they decide you haven’t fried my brains,” he counters.

“A complicated situation,” I admit silently, And a tightrope I must walk. More reason to have him believe my faux innocence. “What will you do if they do not believe you are unaddled?”

“Step aside.”

He says it so easily and ignores my dropped jaw.

“I’m not even certain I can trust you, Princess. Why would I stop my men from carrying out the exact orders I set out to achieve?”

“Because we’re friends!” I throw a hand up in exasperation. “Because we both acknowledge that someone is lying.”

“And that someone is probably your people, no?”

“No!”

“You’re the royal family,” he presses. “We were the lowly foot soldiers. Only one side had something to lose.
