âWhat will happen when we arrive back in your city?â I sit on a fallen log by the fire, my clothes dry and warm, my stomach filling, and my hands wet from the juices that drip from my dinnerâs meat. âNow that I am no longer your captive but aâ¦â I think on that for a moment and try to summon a word that wonât taste like acid on my tongue. âFriend.â
Malachai snorts, but hides it by taking another bite. He sits right beside me, his legs open wide so his thigh touches my knee, and his natural scent mixed with the worn leather of his armor overpowers even the smell of baking fish. He chews on his dinner and swipes a hand across a heavy bottom lip to reveal a grin. âYou were to come home bound, starving, and hurt. This was not supposed to be a weekend spa trip for you.â
âAnd yet,â I look at my fish and then the rushing water Malachai restarted once we got out and dried off. âIâm fed, clean, smiling, and my fire and your water means we can create a spa whenever we want.â
He lifts a single brow and shakes his head at the fire. âI suggest you stop wanting, if you donât want me to see you in your skin.â
âYou didnât answer my question.â I toss the last of my fish into the fire, then sit back and groan at my pleasantly satiated belly. âTheyâre gonna want my head at the gates, no?â
âYep.â He continues to eat. Continues to fill his body thatâs almost twice my size. âMy mission was to capture the princess and bring her home to die. Ugh,â he grunts. âMeans Iâll have to protect you when we arrive.â
âNice turn of events,â I snicker. âDonât sound so pleased.â
âIâll ensure you have a moment to speak, Tallulah, but this war has been going for a long time. Whoâs to say you didnât bewitch and trick me in this forest?â
I consider that, only to smirk and lift one shoulder.
âYouâll have a minute to state your business,â he repeats, âthen our guards will assume youâve tricked me.â
âWhich means they question your mental state and ability to rule,â I point out.
âAnd eventually leads to you becoming a prisoner once more, and me a ward of the hospital wing until they decide you havenât fried my brains,â he counters.
âA complicated situation,â I admit silently, And a tightrope I must walk. More reason to have him believe my faux innocence. âWhat will you do if they do not believe you are unaddled?â
âStep aside.â
He says it so easily and ignores my dropped jaw.
âIâm not even certain I can trust you, Princess. Why would I stop my men from carrying out the exact orders I set out to achieve?â
âBecause weâre friends!â I throw a hand up in exasperation. âBecause we both acknowledge that someone is lying.â
âAnd that someone is probably your people, no?â
âNo!â
âYouâre the royal family,â he presses. âWe were the lowly foot soldiers. Only one side had something to lose.
